Identifying Fabric Fibers:

You can learn about fabric content by doing basic burn tests. Take some threads from your fabric and put them in small dishes. Light them with a match. Watch how they burn and smell. Look at what’s left after burning. Check these results against the guide below. This test isn’t perfect but it helps identify different materials. Pay attention to how the threads react when they catch fire.

Fabric Flammability Chart:

How To Perform Fabric Field Burn Test?

You can do a basic fire test on fabrics in the field based on NFPA 701 rules. The test works by holding a flame to the fabric for 12 seconds. After that, the fabric needs to stop burning within 2 seconds. It should not burn more than 4 inches of material. Any drips that fall must put themselves out. This quick test only tells you if a fabric burns really badly. It does not prove the fabric will pass strict lab tests like NFPA 701. To be sure about fire safety, you need proper testing in a certified lab.
