Specifications:
For use on well-draining, SLOPED roof surfaces only. Permagard® is suitable for adhesion to a range of substrates, including weathered wood, shakes, plywood, clapboard, primed metal, galvanized, aluminum, tin, copper, asbestos, asphalt, urethane, polyester, primed Styrofoam, fiberglass, built-up-roofs, bonded roof gravel, rolled roofing, modified bitumen membranes, mineral surfaced roofing, concrete tiles, clay tiles, masonry tiles (flat or barrel), primed synthetic or aluminum, adobe, slate, slab, and properly prepared EPDM. This coating is ideal for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
For flat roofs or situations involving limited ponding water, see PERMAKOTE PLUS.
PREPARATION OF SURFACE: The roof must be sound, entirely dry, and properly prepped prior to the application of the coating. All holes, cracks, flashings, valleys, vents must be mended, a waterproof caulk and sealant, and seams should be taped and sealed. For metal surfaces, grease, oil, and any other foreign material must be cleared before priming. Rust or uncoated metal should be primed with a red iron oxide primer sealer, and a degreaser should be employed on galvanized or coated metals which have oils or surface treatments. To confirm adhesion for galvanized or coated metal, try Permagard® in a small area and evaluate after 48 hours. If the adhesion is lacking, the metal should be lightly scuffed without penetrating the coated finish or galvanizing. A red metal oxide primer should be used to spot prime any penetrated areas, and should be implemented for the entire coated or galvanized surface.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: The product must not be thinned, but must be utilized as is. To ensure uniformity of color, multiple containers of the same shade should be mixed. The coating should not be applied when the temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit or the humidity is high. Also, it should not be used if it will be exposed to rain or dew before it has had enough time to dry (roughly two to four hours). Drying time will depend on the temperature, humidity, and location. It should be applied using a brush, roller, or spray and must be spread evenly. The spread rate will vary based on the surface, and each coat should be between 12 to 16 mils wet film thickness. After the first coat has been applied, at least 12 hours must pass before the second coat can be applied. Two coats are recommended, resulting in a total dry film thickness of 16 mils; however, if primer was used, a minimum of 20 mils is obligatory for warranty compliance.
AIRLESS SPRAYERS: A minimum of a 1 gallon per minute piston type airless sprayer with a tip size of .027 must be used. All line and gun filters should be taken away before spraying.
CLEAN UP: Any spills, tools, and overspray should be washed with warm soapy water while the coating is still wet.
